UberExec or Uber X?

Uber is a fantastic way for those with a driving license to make a little bit of money on the side. If you go about it the right way, it can even be a full-time occupation.

Uber is a fantastic way for those with a driving license to make a little bit of money on the side. If you go about it the right way, it can even be a full-time occupation.

The Uber service can actually be divided into several different categories, depending on the type of vehicle being used. For passengers with special mobility needs, there’s Uber Assist, which comes with a specially-trained driver. For wheelchair users, there’s Uber Access. And for large groups of passengers, there’s UberXL, a category for large vehicles with room for up to 6 people.

The most popular two categories of Uber are UberX and Uber Exec.

What is Uber X?

Uber X is the service’s affordable option. The standards here are not particularly stringent. The car will need to be newer than 2008 in London, and 2006 elsewhere in the country. It must have at least four doors – as passengers do not want to have to clamber over the passenger seat to reach the rear of the car. There’s a strict ban on commercial branding, and the vehicle must be in good condition. Drivers must be at least 21, and have several years of experience driving (this precise requirement will vary according to the city you’re going to be operating in.

What’s Uber Executive?

An Uber Exec vehicle is, by definition, a luxury car for passengers looking for premium-quality transport. They might be Audis, BMWs or Mercedes, typically with all-leather interiors, heated seats and other mod-cons. The vehicle must have been registered in 2014 or later, and it must be entirely black. If you’re going to be driving the same car for longer than a few years, look for an extended Mercedes warranty.

Uber Exec drivers are held to higher standards of behaviour. They must have completed more than a thousand trips on the platform, and have gleaned an average rating of more than 4.85 stars.

What’s more profitable?

You might suspect that the Uber Executive vehicle would be the more rewarding, even after you take into account the cost of running and maintaining a more expensive luxury car. Uber Exec customers will pay up to quadruple the price for the privilege of driving in style. However, customers of this sort aren’t always available, and thus Uber Exec drivers will often find themselves picking up standard-fare passengers with their shiny new vehicles. You’ll need to account for the cost of depreciation – which, when you’re racking up considerable miles, can be galling.
